Tomato Beef and Zucchini Vermicelli

Vegetarian days last only a few days and we're back to meat. Slice beef and marinate with the ususal suspects. Peel and dice tomatos. Fry beef for a mintue and set aside. Add tomatos to pan and simmer until broken down a bit. Add the beef, season with salt, pepper, and suger. Done.
Shread zucchini, soak vermicelli, dried shrimps, and slice ginger. Fry ginger, add shrimps, zucchini. Add oyster sauce, sugar, and salt. Add water and vermicelli, boil, and simmer for a few mintues. Served everything with rice.

We were at Earl's birthday party and at the end of it Regina gave all the kids these kiddie tattoos. I thought it was so cute what you two chose. The quality is not bad, it's been 3 days now and they still look decent.

I wonder what I would do if one day you two want to get real tattoos. I mean I can't say no right because I've got them myself, that's gonna be a tough one.

The Real Kai

Your mother didn't like me taking this video, but I think I shouldn't only document the good things, moments like this is part of (quite a large part) our daily lives so it deserves some mentioning on the blog. I really hope you are through with this whiney toddler stage soon, sometimes it really drives us up the wall.

Deep Fried Camebert with Rocket Salad and Strawberry Sauce

Had this before at some restaurant, didn't think it should be too hard to make so decided to try my luck. Turned out ok.

Simply roll cheese in seasoned flour, then coat with beated egg, lasted breadcrumbs. Deep fry until golden, and viola!

For the sauce I only pureed the strawberries, didn't even add sugar.

For the salad, rocket, pears, honey coated walntus, olive oil, salt and pepper.

Served with some French bread.

Broccoli Cauliflower Gratin with Butter Potatoes

I decided to cook less meat, let's see how long it will last. I think cooking veggies requires a lot more creativitiy.
Made these two simpe things for dinner. For the gratin, steamed the veggies for a few mins, then drain. Mix the veggies with gouda cheese, cream, and season with salt, pepper, and paprika. Bake in buttered dish for 20 mins. Served the greens with some potatoes simply boiled in salted water and topped with butter and pasley.

Carrot Ginger Soup

Made this for the kids and me when my wife was in Munich.
The carrots were about to go bad so peeled and chopped them up, sauted onion, garlic, and ginger and added the carrots to the mix. I used potatoes to thicken the soup, cover with water, added bay leaves, turn from boil to simmer for 20 mins. Remove leaves, pureed everything, added more water to thin it out and seasoned with salt and pepper. Kai liked it, surprisingly, despite the ginger taste. Anna didn't touch it at all.

The Giants in the Sandbox

This one was taken at a get together at Kai's kindergarten couple of weekends ago, the weather was beautiful and we just sat in the sandbox and watched the kids play. In September Kai will not be returning to the same kindergarten. The one closer to our flat finally has a spot, hope it won't be such a big shock for him.

Time for Haircut

You just had your first professional haircut about a month ago (which was free because the hairdresser lady said that it was your first), but look at you, your banks is again sticking into your eyes! Time to get a haircut soon.

Corn Box

Took the bikes to go to a pick-your-own-fruits-and-veggies-farm last weekend. Besides the fields of strawberries and other produce they also have quite a few farm animals, which sadly are not for petting. They did have this giant corn box which even I had loads of fun in.

Spaghetti Aglio Olio and Simple Bruschetta

Made some quick food for dinner on the weekend. Sauteed the garlic in olive oil, tossed with the pasta and the left over tomato salad from the picnic. Stale french bread sliced and roasted in the oven, rubbed with garlic clove, sprinkled oilve oil on top and seasoned with salt and pepper.

French Toast

The rest of the day-old french bread was turned into french toast with french fruit salad for my wife and I without kids!

Scotch Eggs, Mixed Bean Falafel, Tomato Salad

A bit of a weird lunch combination, but I made the eggs for a picnic which got cancelled due to bad weather. And the mixed bean falafel from a failed attempt a couple of days ago.
The salad. Simply chop up the tomatoes and mix with shallots and herbs. Season with olive oil, salt and pepper. Let marinate for a bit before serving.
The eggs. Hard boil the eggs, dust with seasoned flour, wrap sausage meat around them, dust again with flour, then egg, then breadcrumbs. Deep fry until golden. Serve cool.
The falafels. I used a mixture of beans, purreed them with garlic and onion, season with cumin, salt, and pepper. Fried the patties in a pan with oil until golden.

Muesli with Fruit and Yogurt

Berry season here in Germany. I bought raspberry and strawberry from the region and made this super healthy breakfast for us. Started with organic muesli, topped with plain yogurt, added chopped apples, pears, banana, strawberries, and raspberries. Lastly topped with generous amount of honey, organic, of course.

Saure zipfel

Been sick for a couple of days so didn't want to eat anything fried. Usually that's how you'd prepare the bratwursts. But I opted for the other method, which is to cook them in a broth of white wine, vinegar, stock, onion, and herbs. Served them with slices of dark German bread and horseradish.

Dracula's Child

That's what your mother called you when she saw this picture. I took it right before I washed your face. Obviously it was not blood, it's cherry season here now and you stuffed your face full of cherries. Fruit seems to be the only thing you won't refuse to eat right now.

Animal Noises

Usually dinner time is very stressful for us, with Kai refusing to eat and Anna throwing her food everywhere. But on this day it was exceptionally nice. Perhaps you both liked the pea risotto and the strawberries with whipped cream for dessert. Your mom bought these kiddie table mats for you two and we just made noises from the animals on them. I wish dinner time would be so nice everyday.

Pea and Ham Risotto

Quick and simple dinner, took 30 mins to make and 10 mins to finish. Kids looooooooove peas, and I love rice.

Bread Pudding

Had the Kaisers over the dinner the other night, 4 adults and 5 kids. Good thing I made a dessert otherwise there wouldn't have been enough food. Used the stale bread rolls, soaked them in milk, added eggs, sugar, cinnamonand. Baked for about 30 mins and served with vanille sauce. The kids loved it, it wasn't really my thing.

Kai the Pirate

Don't know where you got the bandana from but as soon as I saw it I thought of putting it on your head. You really liked it, so did your mom and she thought you looked like a pirate which you were very happy about. She asked you to make some angry mean pirate faces for the camera. I have to say that you did a good job at that. Oh and the lego in your hands was supposed to be a gun or dagger or some kind of weapon.

Cuddly Anni

I love these pictures. Usually after dinner Anna is always happy and satisfied. Best time for being cuddly with her. And Rebecca really took advantage of that this day, and me as well to snap these wonderful kodak moments.

Papa and Mama

Not very often do we take pictures of ourselves. We need manage to take one with the help of Harry on your mother's 32nd birthday. Harry and Anthony came from Berlin for a surprise birthday visit and also to go the beer fest in Erlangen. Your mother's friend Wenke babysat for us while we went to a nice little cosy place for a much needed kids free dinner just the two of us.

Summer Clothes

Took these at Kai's kindergarten. They held a parents day one Sunday afternoon, all the families showed up. It was really a bit too much for me with all the kids but Anna enjoyed herself playing with older children, she even tried to make friends by sitting close to a couple of girls and pointing to the flowers on her shirt.

Older Man

We went to visit Meike and Stephan at their new place a while ago. It's a nice little house with a small yard, the weather was gorgeous so you kids really enjoyed running around outside. Your mother and I really enjoyed ourselves too because you two were very happy playing with rocks, stones, and of course Stephan while I drank my beer and your mother and Meike were preparing food inside.

Both of you seem to enjoy playing with guys better than girls, but you are really a bit too young for Stephan, not to mention he is married!

Tomato Egg, Steamed Zucchinni, and Eggplant Minced Pork

Very simple dishes. Have blogged about the before so not going to elaborate. Except for the eggplant dish I used enchovies instead of the real Chinese salted fish.
